MOOD SWINGS
- Mood swings
- Are you angry with your husband for the way he breathes, or the
neighbors for not waving hello when they pass you by in the car? Do
you feel like you are suffering from constant PMS? Perimenopause can
increase the frequency and severity of your mood swings. Since it
is likely that family members will notice this before you do, take
heed to what they are saying and be sensitive to their feelings. Think
before speaking, and try taking up a relaxing hobby or a form of exercise
like walking or biking. Meditation and biofeedback may also be helpful
in controlling this new sense of hostility. Stress is known to exacerbate
this problem, so as difficult as it may seem at this juncture of your
life, try to reduce and manage your stress with healthy outlets and
a good diet.
- Since many women
are not familiar with the term perimenopause, as well as the physical
and emotional changes that accompany it, they (or their partners/family
members) are often confused. "Just as PMS was a mystery until
several years ago, perimenopause has also been misunderstood until
recently," adds Dr. Nardone. "Members of the medical community
and lay people, as well, need to realize that the feelings these women
have are not just emotional, but the result of actual endocrinologic
alterations in their bodies."
